Slowdown in the Downtown Area
Sylva Police Department and students from Western Carolina University collaborated
on a campaign to prevent speeding on Main Street in Sylva. Students from Western Carolina University worked with Chief Jamison to complete objectives pertaining to the excessive speeding on the downtown roads.
"Our goal is to increase police patrol units in the downtown area to limit excessive
speeding and stop the dangerous driving in a high pedestrian area. It is important to educate children and teenagers in our area to understand the risk of speeding," said
Chief Jeffery L. Jamison of the Sylva Police Department.
Kevin Norris's Honors English 304 class at Smoky Mountain High School won the slogan
contest. "Downtown is the Place to Slow Down," was selected by Chief Jeffery Jamison. The campaign is focused on the community getting involved and spreading awareness to all age groups.
The Kevin Norris's Honors English 304 class will be given a pizza party by the Sylva
Police Department and recognition for naming the campaign. Flyers, posters, and advertisements will have Smoky Mountain High School and Norris's English class that created the slogan.
